Meet the Artist

Jo Morris

Hello I’m Jo and welcome to my colourful world.

I’ve been painting with watercolour for many years and I still consider it a dark art — mainly because of its tricky and unforgiving nature. Despite that, I find it to be an endlessly fascinating and joyful medium to work with. I love how watercolour allows me to conjure ethereal visions with translucent washes, but I’m at my happiest when I dive into explosions of vibrant color.

In recent years, I’ve also been experimenting with other mediums such as alcohol inks, acrylics, and oils. Each brings its own unique characteristics and challenges and I thoroughly enjoy mixing them up to see what unfolds. My studio often resembles a colorful chemistry lab, rather than a traditional art space and I find the process of experimentation both exciting and inspiring.

For me, color is a form of therapy. It has the power to shift my mood while I’m immersed in the act of creating and I believe it can also influence the emotions of those who experience my work. You could call it Black Magic—an energy I strive to harness through my art. If I can evoke an emotional response—be it a smile, laughter, or even tears—then I feel I’ve achieved my goal.

As Henri Matisse said: “With color one obtains an energy that seems to stem from witchcraft.”

That’s the magic I aim to capture and share through my paintings.
